1983 (less political than 1984)
As I mentioned in a previous post, our house was built in 1983. Our now bare slab hasn’t seen the light of day since that year (I’m ignoring the carpet replacement since I don’t know when that happened and it would ruin my nostalgia, so you ignore it too). I was thinking about what was occurring in my house while it was being built. Were the workers wearing “Frankie Says Relax” t-shirts, worrying about national debt, and driving American cars? Let’s take a trip back, to the year my house was born, in 1983….
Wow, my house had a great year for movies: Return of the Jedi, Scarface, WarGames, National Lamppon’s Vacation, Christmas Story, Octopussy, and The Meaning of Life, just to name a few that are still epically awesome.
What would have been on the radio while all the painting and spackling was going on (and also while the bucket of white paint was dropped in the center of my living room. We found a huge white splat under the carpet)? More classics: Every Breath You Take by the Police, Down Under by Men at Work, Beat It and Billie Jean by Michael Jackson, Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler (here’s the Literal Video version if you haven’t seen it. It is hilarious!), Mr. Roboto, Sweet Dreams, Come on Eileen, and Let’s Dance by David Bowie. I would have had a hard time working with all that kick ass music playing constantly.
Were the workers driving to work or were they staying home to avoid Hurricane Alicia? Or were they too scared to drive after Christine was released? I’m assuming they all came to work since unemployment in the US was at its highest level since 1941. They were probably grateful to have a job (just like me and Hubby right now). Were they worried about the Star Wars missile defense program, or buying cabbage patch dolls for their kids? They could have discussed Knight Rider versus that new show, The A-Team.
Ok, enough nostalgia, and enough wikipedia for today, right? I guess I’ll log off of Arpanet, and use my landline telephone to do some work. I need to type several copies of a memo for my boss, and hope the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaches 1300 within my lifetime. Fingers crossed!
